"Oh no, oh no, oh no... I've got to get home!"

She started to panic.

"Damnit! Why'd I ever leave the house?! What was I thinking?!" Her eyes started to water.

"My mom! I have to go back!"

"Hey, it's okay." Derek says calmly. "Let's go, we'll get back."

Marilyn started running towards the park exit without hesitation.

Marilyn stops when she gets to the bus stop.

She looks at Derek when he catches up.

"This is really bad...you don't understand.." She said in a worried tone.

Derek breaths harder after stopping.

"Why, what's going on?"

"Usually while I'm not home, my mom has an aid there at home with her. Before, she was very gracious with us and sometimes worked extra for free. But paying her has become a bit difficult so now she strictly stays as long as we pay her for."

Marilyn put her palm on her forhead, angry with herself.

"She leaves just before I get home from work. My mom has been alone this entire time..."

She saw the bus coming from a distance.

"I just hope she's okay..."

The bus arrives.

"It's not your fault."

She gets on the bus with Derek.

Derek shrugs, getting onboard the bus.

"What, exactly, could happen?"

Marilyn doesn't answer for a long moment.

"That's the one thing I don't want to think about."

Derek looks at the floor, not wanting to insist.

"Sure thing."

Marilyn was very antsy throughout the whole bus ride. Her knees and hands shook.

It almost felt as if it was an extremely long bus ride.

Derek tries to comfort her.

"Hey, I'm sure everything will be okay."

Marilyn doesn't say anything.

After what seemed like eternity, the bus gets to the destination.

"C'mon." she says, hastily getting off the bus, ready to run down to her street.

Derek follows Marilyn quickly, trying to get over the bad feeling in his chest.

Marilyn ran as fast as she could without stopping all the way to her house with Derek following.

When she got to the front door, she desperately searched for her keys in her purse. She finally unlocked the door.

Her grabbed the knob then froze. She just listened.

"It's so quiet."

She was afraid to open the door.

Derek felt guilty for allowing this to happen.

"I'll go in first, if you want."

"No, no...that's okay."

Marilyn exhales and turns the knob, walking inside. The inside of her house was small, a little shabby, but decent enough.

"Mom?"

She set her stuff down onto a nearby chair.

"...mom?" She repeated.

Marilyn walks down a small hall towards her mother's room. The door was cracked open, Marilyn stops and listen again.

God please no...

She gently pushed the door open, the lights in the room were dim. Her mom was laying on the bed, where Marilyn had left her. She walks to her side.
"Mom..." She whispered.

No response.

"Mom." She said louder. Nothing. Marilyn shook her shoulder. "Mom wake up! Please!" She was stone cold.

Derek followed, not speaking. He doesn't know what to do, what to say.

There was a long moment of silence.

Until Marilyn dropped to her knees, and started to cry.
